Floating-leaved moth

The floating-leaved moth (Parapoynx stratiolata) is a member of the Crambidae family. Unlike most other Lepidoptera, this species has evolved to complete its larval stages underwater. This adaptation makes it a significant, albeit specialized, pest for owners of ponds and water gardens.

The pest primarily targets a variety of aquatic macrophytes. Its favorite host plants include the water soldier (Stratiotes aloides), water lilies (Nymphaeaceae), and pondweeds (Potamogeton). These plants often suffer severe defoliation when the larvae are present in high numbers during the summer months.

The biology of Parapoynx stratiolata is fascinating due to its aquatic adaptations. Larvae are equipped with tracheal gills, allowing them to extract oxygen directly from the water. They construct portable cases from fragments of host plant leaves bound together with silk. This protective structure serves as both a food source and a shelter against predators throughout their development.

Damage caused by the larvae manifests as irregular holes or large sections of leaves being stripped away. As the larvae grow, they consume substantial amounts of leaf tissue, which can stress the plant and reduce its photosynthetic capacity. In ornamental ponds, this aesthetic damage is usually the primary concern for the gardener.

• Monitor plants for leaf fragments stitched together or missing tissue.
• Hand-pick larvae and remove infested leaf segments during initial stages.
• Utilize biological controls such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) specifically formulated for aquatic use if necessary.

Effective management requires early intervention. Because the larvae are well-protected within their silk cases, systemic contact insecticides are rarely effective and can be toxic to fish. Physical removal of infected parts of the vegetation remains the most sustainable and eco-friendly method for maintaining pond health.
