Parasa

Parasa is a genus of moths belonging to the family Limacodidae, commonly referred to as slug moths or stinging nettle caterpillars. These insects are well-known among agronomists and gardeners for the urticating hairs on their larvae, which deliver painful stings upon contact with human skin.

Taxonomically, the genus is part of the order Lepidoptera. The larvae are distinctively slug-like in appearance, lacking visible legs and moving by means of a suction-like mechanism on the underside of their body. Their vivid and sometimes warning color patterns are evolutionary adaptations to deter potential predators.

These pests pose a significant threat to a wide range of vegetation, including ornamental trees, coffee, tea, coconut, and various fruit-bearing species. Feeding behavior involves the skeletonization or complete consumption of leaves, which leads to reduced crop yield, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the host plant.

The life cycle of the Parasa moth follows complete metamorphosis. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars before constructing a hard, globular, or oval-shaped cocoon, often securely attached to the twigs or trunks of the host plant to pupate.

Effective management and control strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical methods. Early detection is critical; inspecting the undersides of leaves during the growing season allows for early intervention. If infestations are significant, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents is necessary.
