Parasa herbifera is a significant member of the Limacodidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Frequently referred to as a slug caterpillar, it is recognized as a major defoliating pest in many parts of Asia, where it attacks both ornamental and agricultural plant species.

The host range of this insect is extensive, targeting essential economic crops such as coffee, tea, and cocoa. Additionally, it poses a threat to various fruit trees, including mango and coconut palms. The larvae are notorious for their ability to inflict severe damage on foliage within a relatively short period during active growth phases.

The biology of Parasa herbifera is characterized by a multi-generational cycle that is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and humidity. Eggs are usually laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The larvae, which are the primary damaging stage, are flattened and slug-like, adorned with stinging hairs that protect them from predators and cause dermatitis in humans.

Damage occurs primarily through the consumption of leaf tissue. Young larvae often feed in small groups, skeletonizing the leaves, while later instars consume the entire leaf lamina except for the main veins. This persistent defoliation can lead to stunted growth, reduced fruit set, and in extreme cases, the mortality of younger, more vulnerable plants.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Cultural control involves maintaining vigorous plant health and pruning infested branches to reduce local populations. Biological control, utilizing natural enemies like braconid wasps, is highly recommended to manage outbreaks without disrupting the local ecosystem.
