Description
Parasa lepida, commonly known as the blue-striped nettle grub, is a significant pest belonging to the Limacodidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth is infamous for its larval stage, which possesses stinging hairs and a slug-like appearance, making it both a botanical threat and a physical hazard for farmers working in the fields.
This pest affects a wide array of agricultural and ornamental plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging coconut palms, coffee, cacao, mango, citrus, and tea plants. Its ability to feed on diverse foliage allows it to thrive in both managed plantations and natural forest environments, causing localized but intense economic losses.
The life cycle begins with eggs laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously on leaf tissue. The pupal stage occurs inside a hard, round, silk-based cocoon, which is firmly attached to the host tree, often in bark crevices or at the base of leaves, protecting the insect through dormancy.
The damage caused by Parasa lepida is characterized by defoliation. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the leaves, while later stages consume the entire leaf lamina. Severe infestations lead to stunted tree growth, reduced yield, and, in young plants, potential mortality due to the loss of photosynthetic surface area required for survival.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices, such as pruning and destroying branches containing cocoons, are vital. Biological control using pathogens like Bacillus thuringiensis or natural parasitoids is highly recommended to maintain ecological balance, while chemical pesticides should be applied sparingly to avoid killing beneficial predatory insects.
