Chinese slug caterpillar

Systematic position: The Chinese slug caterpillar (Parasa sinica) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Limacodidae. The species is named for its larvae, which resemble small slugs due to their flattened, fleshy appearance and their distinct method of gliding movement on vegetation.

Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous insect that primarily attacks trees in the Rosaceae family. It is most commonly found on apple, pear, plum, peach, and cherry trees. In cases of high population density, it can also infest various ornamental shrubs and nut trees found in orchards or private gardens.

Biology and life cycle: The adult moths are nocturnal, which makes early detection difficult for growers. Females lay eggs on the undersides of host leaves. Upon hatching, larvae feed voraciously, passing through several instars. The species overwinters as a prepupa inside a tough, cocoon-like shell attached to the bark or twigs of the host tree, emerging as adults in the following season.

Damage and harmfulness: Young larvae feed on the leaf epidermis, causing skeletonization. Older larvae consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the midribs and petioles. Severe infestations result in extensive defoliation, which causes significant stress to the host tree, reduces fruit size, and negatively impacts the overall vigor and productivity of the orchard.

Control measures: Managing Parasa sinica requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on both prevention and direct control:

• Winter pruning and removal of branches hosting visible cocoons to reduce the overwintering population.
• Monitoring adult moth flight activity using pheromone or light traps to determine optimal spraying timing.
• Applying selective insecticides that target larvae while preserving beneficial predatory insects.
• Encouraging natural biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that attack slug caterpillar pupae.
