Description

Parasa vivida is a moth species belonging to the Limacodidae family, commonly known as slug caterpillars. This pest is native to tropical Africa and is recognized as a significant threat to various cash crops, impacting both large-scale plantations and smaller agro-ecosystems.

The larvae are polyphagous, targeting a wide range of important agricultural crops. Coffee, cocoa, and oil palm are particularly susceptible to infestation. Because of their voracious feeding habits, a single colony can cause severe defoliation, leading to stunted plant growth and substantial losses in crop yield.

The biological cycle of Parasa vivida involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the leaves. The larvae are easily recognizable by their slug-like appearance and the presence of urticating (stinging) hairs, which serve as a defense mechanism against predators and represent a hazard to human workers.

Damage to the host plants typically begins with the consumption of the leaf epidermis, progressing to the destruction of entire leaves except for the tougher veins. This level of damage disrupts the plant's ability to photosynthesize and can render the trees weak, making them more susceptible to opportunistic secondary infections and further pest colonization.
