Description

Paratettix is a genus belonging to the Tetrigidae family, commonly known as pygmy grasshoppers. These insects are easily identified by their elongated pronotum, which extends over the abdomen, often reaching the tip of the hind wings. Unlike typical grasshoppers, they are highly specialized to live in moist habitats, near water bodies, and on irrigation-fed agricultural lands.

As agricultural pests, Paratettix primarily impact young seedlings of crops like rice and various vegetables grown in greenhouse or humid environments. They feed on tender plant tissues, consuming the epidermis and creating small, irregular holes in the leaves. Their presence is most problematic during the early developmental stages of the plants when they are most vulnerable to defoliation.

The life cycle of these insects involves incomplete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as adults within the soil surface or under dense crop debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, the insects become active, and females begin laying eggs in moist soil substrates. Nymphs emerge and undergo multiple molting stages, gradually developing into adults while continuing to feed on green plant matter throughout their growth.

The damage caused by Paratettix is characterized by visible chewing marks and reduced plant vigor. In cases of high population density, seedlings can be stunted or killed entirely. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for opportunistic fungal and bacterial pathogens, which can exacerbate the damage and lead to secondary infections within the crop canopy.

  • Managing soil moisture levels through improved drainage systems.
