Taxonomic classification: The Taiwanese groundhopper (Tetrix formosanus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tetrigidae. These insects are distinguished from typical grasshoppers by their elongated pronotum, which often extends back over the entire length of the abdomen, providing effective camouflage against soil and litter backgrounds.

Host plants and damage: While primarily saprophagous or fungivorous, feeding on algae, mosses, and detritus, Tetrix formosanus can become a significant pest when populations surge. They tend to feed on the tender stems and leaves of seedling vegetables and grain crops, especially in greenhouse environments or humid field conditions.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in soil cracks or under dense vegetative cover. Once temperatures rise in the spring, mating occurs, and females deposit eggs directly into moist soil. The nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages, gradually developing their wings and reproductive capabilities.

Harmfulness: The damage caused by these pests is mechanical. By grazing on seedling tissues, they create entry points for opportunistic plant pathogens, including bacteria and fungi. In nurseries or during early growth stages, heavy infestation can cause significant stunting or total loss of crop stands due to the destruction of the apical meristem.

Protection measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach focusing on environmental modification:

• Removal of weeds and accumulated organic litter to eliminate breeding sites.
• Improving soil drainage to reduce the humidity levels that favor groundhopper development.
• Implementing soil cultivation practices such as deep plowing to expose overwintering stages.
