Description
The stubby-root nematode (Paratrichodorus pachydermus) is a soil-dwelling migratory ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Triplonchida and the family Trichodoridae. These nematodes are typically found in light, sandy, or loamy soils, where they move freely between soil particles to access plant roots.
This pest has a diverse host range, frequently attacking essential crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and various horticultural plants. By feeding on the tips of root hairs, they cause the roots to stop elongating, leading to the characteristic "stubby" root appearance, which severely limits the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients.
The life cycle of the nematode involves several stages from egg to juvenile and adult, all of which occur within the rhizosphere. Their activity is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature, as they require a film of water around soil particles to move and feed effectively.
The primary economic significance of Paratrichodorus pachydermus is its role as a vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). This virus causes internal necrosis and browning in potato tubers, commonly known as "spraing" or "rust spot." This damage significantly degrades crop quality, often resulting in complete rejection by processing industries.
Management strategies focus on reducing nematode populations and breaking the virus transmission cycle:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the nematode population.
- Rigorous control of weeds that may harbor the virus or serve as alternative hosts.
- Application of appropriate soil nematicides where infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
- Maintaining optimal soil conditions and using cover crops that inhibit nematode reproduction.
