Description

Paratrichodorus porosus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Trichodoridae, order Triplonchida. As an ectoparasite, it does not penetrate the root tissue entirely but feeds on root cells from the outside using its specialized onchiostyle, causing characteristic damage to the root system.

The host range of this nematode includes a wide variety of vegetable crops, such as potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers, as well as several ornamental and fruit crops. It is particularly prevalent in sandy soils, where the pore structure allows for easier movement and reproduction of the nematode population.

The biology of this organism involves a life cycle completed entirely in the soil. It undergoes several juvenile stages before reaching adulthood. The activity of these nematodes is highly dependent on soil moisture and soil temperature; they typically aggregate near the tips of actively growing roots where they feed on elongating root cells.

The primary damage caused by Paratrichodorus porosus is known as "stubby root" symptom. The roots become stunted, deformed, and fail to develop properly, which severely limits the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. Furthermore, these nematodes are known vectors for several important tobraviruses, such as the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV).

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode. Strategies include long-term crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce soil populations. Chemical nematicides can be effective but are often restricted. Additionally, maintaining soil health with organic matter and practicing proper sanitation of farming equipment are critical steps to prevent the spread of the pest to uninfested fields.
