Description

Paratrichodorus renifer is a soil-inhabiting nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Trichodoridae. Often referred to as a stubby-root nematode, it is an obligate ectoparasite that feeds on the outer layers of root tips. Its microscopic size makes it difficult to detect without specialized laboratory analysis of soil and root samples.

The host range of this nematode is quite broad, affecting various economically important crops. It is frequently found in association with vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and onions, as well as several grain crops. These nematodes thrive in sandy or light-textured soils where they can move freely to seek out new root tips to feed upon.

The biological cycle of Paratrichodorus renifer comprises eggs, four larval stages, and adults. They spend their entire life cycle in the soil surrounding the roots. By puncturing root cells with their specialized feeding tube, they cause significant physiological damage. Furthermore, they are highly efficient vectors for tobacco rattle virus (TRV), which can lead to severe necrotic disorders in tuberous crops.

Symptoms of infestation are often observed as patches of stunted growth in the field. When plants are carefully extracted, the roots exhibit a characteristic stubby appearance, with shortened, thickened, or necrotic tips. This damage severely restricts the plant's ability to take up water and essential nutrients, resulting in significant yield loss and economic impact for growers.

Effective management of Paratrichodorus renifer requires a comprehensive integrated pest management (IPM) approach due to the limited number of registered chemical treatments:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic cover crops to suppress nematode populations.

  • Soil solarization or steaming for greenhouse and small-scale operations.
