Paratrichodorus teres is a soil-dwelling nematode belonging to the family Trichodoridae (order Triplonchida). These microscopic organisms are known as ectoparasites, meaning they remain outside the root tissue while feeding. They use a specialized feeding apparatus to pierce root cells and extract nutrients, causing direct damage to the host plant's root system.

The host range for this species is quite broad, encompassing many vital agricultural crops. It is particularly problematic for potatoes, sugar beets, onions, and various horticultural crops. Infestations are most severe in sandy and loamy soils, where the pore structure allows for optimal movement of these nematodes toward the roots of emerging seedlings.

The life cycle of Paratrichodorus teres is entirely soil-based. It includes several juvenile stages that look similar to the adult form but are smaller. Development is highly dependent on environmental factors such as soil temperature and moisture levels. When hosts are unavailable, they can survive in the soil by feeding on the roots of various wild weed species.

The damage caused by these nematodes includes stunted root growth, leading to overall poor plant vigor and yield reduction. Beyond direct feeding damage, Paratrichodorus teres serves as an important vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). This viral transmission causes severe "spraing" symptoms, characterized by internal rust-colored necrotic lesions in potato tubers.
