Description
Paratrichodorus tunisiensis is a species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the family Trichodoridae within the order Triplonchida. These microscopic soil-dwelling organisms are known for their ability to damage plant root systems by feeding on cortical cells using a specialized feeding apparatus, known as an onchiostyle, which allows them to penetrate plant tissues.
The host range of this nematode is quite broad, affecting various vegetables, field crops, and ornamental plants. Potatoes, tomatoes, sugar beets, and cereals are among the most frequently affected crops. P. tunisiensis thrives primarily in sandy or light-textured soils, where its movement toward the host root system is facilitated by the soil structure.
The life cycle and biology of this pest are entirely linked to the soil environment and plant roots. Nematodes aggregate around the root tips, injecting digestive enzymes that kill root cells. This leads to the characteristic symptoms of root tip necrosis and inhibited root elongation, which in turn hampers the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients effectively.
Beyond direct physical damage, the economic significance of P. tunisiensis is greatly magnified by its role as a vector for plant viruses, most notably the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). Infected crops often exhibit stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and specific symptoms like "spraing" in potato tubers. Infected areas in fields typically appear as patchy, uneven crop stands.
