Azalea whitefly

The azalea whitefly (Pealius azaleae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is primarily known for infesting plants of the genus Rhododendron, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage to ornamental azaleas in both nursery environments and domestic landscapes.

The life cycle of this pest progresses through the egg, four nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the first-instar nymphs (crawlers) are mobile, but subsequent instars become sessile, attaching themselves firmly to the leaf tissue to feed on plant sap until they reach the pupal stage.

The damage caused by the azalea whitefly is primarily due to the sap-feeding activity of the nymphs. Infested leaves exhibit signs of chlorosis, yellowing, and general lack of vigor. In cases of heavy infestation, the foliage may curl or drop prematurely, significantly weakening the plant and impacting its overall ornamental quality and development.

A major complication of a whitefly infestation is the secretion of honeydew. This sticky substance encourages the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaves with a dark, powdery appearance. Sooty mold interferes with the plant's ability to photosynthesize, further stressing the rhododendrons and detracting from their aesthetic appeal.
