Description

The Mulberry whitefly (Pealius mori) is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. As a significant plant pest, it primarily targets mulberry trees (Morus species), although it can impact other woody plants in nurseries and landscape plantations.

The biology of Pealius mori follows a typical whitefly pattern, including egg, nymphal, and adult stages. The insect thrives in warm environments, and its populations often peak during the summer months when foliage is most succulent and susceptible to infestation by nymphs and adults.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold. First, both nymphs and adults extract sap from the phloem of leaves, leading to chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature defoliation. This extraction weakens the plant structure significantly, especially in young or sensitive trees.

Second, the secretion of honeydew by the insects serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth. This dark fungal coating prevents photosynthesis, reduces the vigor of the plant, and creates an aesthetic problem in addition to the physiological stress imposed on the host tree.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Pealius mori. Strategies include regular monitoring of the underside of leaves, the use of yellow sticky traps to reduce adult populations, and the application of systemic or contact insecticides when high infestation levels are detected.
