Japanese stink bug

The Japanese stink bug (Pentatoma japonica) is a member of the Pentatomidae family within the order Hemiptera. As an invasive and agricultural pest, it is known for its ability to damage a wide variety of plants by piercing plant tissues with its specialized mouthparts to feed on nutrient-rich sap.

This pest affects diverse crops, ranging from vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and beans to fruit trees such as apples and pears. The bug's feeding habits can significantly compromise agricultural yields, leading to both qualitative and quantitative losses in production that directly impact farm profitability.

The biology of Pentatoma japonica involves a typical hemimetabolous metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymphal (five instars), and adult stages. In fruit crops, this often results in the "pitting" effect, rendering the produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary fungal infections.
