Perforatella bidentata is a species of air-breathing land snail belonging to the family Hygromiidae. While often overlooked, this mollusk can become a nuisance in home gardens and agricultural plots when environmental conditions are favorable. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging during moist periods to feed on succulent vegetation.

This pest affects a wide range of horticultural crops, including vegetable seedlings, leafy greens, and various flowers. They demonstrate a particular preference for tender tissues such as young leaves, stems, and ripening fruits. In greenhouses and nursery settings, they can cause rapid and severe defoliation of vulnerable crops if left unmanaged.

The biology of Perforatella bidentata is strictly dependent on moisture levels. These snails lay clusters of eggs in damp, dark soil or under decaying organic matter. The life cycle involves multiple stages of growth, with individuals maturing under moderate temperature conditions. Their ability to hibernate in the soil surface layers allows them to survive cold winters and reappear rapidly when spring rains begin.

The damage caused is characterized by irregular holes in foliage, often referred to as skeletonization, or complete consumption of leaves. Because they feed on the surface of fruits, they leave unsightly tracks of dried mucus, which degrades the quality and marketability of the produce. Moreover, the lesions created by their rasping mouthparts act as entry points for plant pathogens.

Effective management strategies include cultural and chemical interventions:
