Pine buprestid

Taxonomic classification. The genus Phaenops, including the notorious Phaenops cyanea, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that primarily target weakened coniferous trees in forest ecosystems, contributing to the decline of pine stands under stress.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts are various species of pine (Pinus spp.). Larvae of the Phaenops beetle feed on the inner bark, cambium, and sapwood. Their larval galleries are irregular and often score the wood, which severely disrupts the vascular system of the tree. Visible symptoms include resin flow, yellowing of the needles, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the tree.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle varies from one to two years depending on environmental temperature and host tree condition. Adult beetles are active during the warm summer months, searching for suitable hosts. They are attracted to trees experiencing physiological stress, often caused by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous infestations by other bark beetles, where they lay their eggs in bark crevices.

Economic importance. These beetles can cause significant economic losses in the forestry sector. By targeting weakened trees, they accelerate tree mortality in drought-stricken areas. A severe infestation by Phaenops can turn a manageable forest disturbance into a large-scale outbreak, causing extensive timber quality reduction and significant financial losses for timber producers.

Control measures. Managing Phaenops populations requires a combination of silvicultural practices and monitoring:

• Implementing sanitation cuttings to remove infested or dying trees before beetle emergence.
• Using trap trees to capture beetles and reduce the breeding population.
• Monitoring the health of forest stands to detect signs of infestation early.
• Maintaining forest stand density and vigor to increase natural resistance against wood-boring insects.
