Pheidole pallidula ant

Systematic position. Pheidole pallidula belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. It is a highly successful and widespread ant species, often identified by its ability to thrive in various Mediterranean and arid ecosystems, frequently forming large, complex colonies.

Biology and life cycle. This species is known for its extreme dimorphism, featuring both small minor workers and large-headed major workers, or soldiers. The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Colony foundation is initiated by a single queen following a nuptial flight, who digs a chamber in the soil to rear her first brood of workers.

Nature of damage and pest status. While not always directly eating plant tissue, they are considered pests due to their role in protecting sap-sucking insects like aphids and mealybugs from natural predators. By tending these insects for honeydew, they facilitate the rapid spread of viral and fungal plant diseases, while also occasionally damaging seedlings and roots by nesting directly in the root zone.

Susceptible crops. A wide variety of agricultural crops, including vegetable gardens, fruit tree saplings, and greenhouse plants, are vulnerable. Their nesting activity often causes excessive soil aeration around delicate roots, leading to dehydration and stress for the plants, which can significantly reduce overall agricultural yield and vitality.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

• Application of slow-acting toxic baits that allow workers to transport poison back to the queen.
• Targeted use of contact insecticides in areas of high activity or nest entrances.
• Biological control of aphid populations to remove the main food source for the ants.
• Implementation of physical barriers such as sticky bands on fruit trees to prevent ant migration.
