The Pheidole sculpturata, often identified as a harvester ant species within the Formicidae family, is a significant pest in various agricultural regions. Unlike beneficial insects, this species specializes in harvesting seeds of cultivated crops, making it a critical threat to newly sown fields. Their complex social structure allows them to systematically deplete seed banks in the soil.

These ants primarily damage cereals and legumes, such as maize, pearl millet, sorghum, and beans. The damage is most acute immediately after sowing, when seeds are most vulnerable. By systematically transporting seeds to their nests, the colony can reduce the plant density of a field to levels that require immediate replanting, leading to substantial financial losses for farmers.

The biology of Pheidole sculpturata is characterized by a multi-caste system, including majors (soldiers) with enlarged mandibles specifically adapted for crushing hard seeds. Their lifecycle includes the typical complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Due to their ability to survive in arid conditions and their high reproductive rate, these ants maintain high population densities in agricultural landscapes.

The harm caused by this pest is mainly due to the depletion of the seedbed. The characteristic damage pattern consists of empty seed rows or large bare patches in a field where germination failed due to the total removal of seeds. This not only reduces yields but also increases the costs of farm operations, as soil preparation and sowing procedures must often be repeated.

Effective management strategies against Pheidole sculpturata include:

• Application of poisoned baits that incorporate food attractants to control the colony population.
