Description
Systematic position. Phlyctaenia extricalis is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. As part of this diverse family, the species functions as a specific herbivore that interacts with various plant hosts, occasionally rising to pest status in agricultural environments.
Host plants. This species primarily infests plants belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its host range often includes various wild Asteraceae, such as goldenrod (Solidago) species, which serve as native reservoirs. When these plants are present near agricultural plots, the moth can migrate to cultivated varieties, causing localized infestations.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are typically nocturnal, with mating and egg-laying occurring at night. The larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on plant tissues. The species typically overwinters in the pupal stage, encased in a silk cocoon located within the upper layer of soil or sheltered by leaf litter.
Nature of damage and harm. The larvae are the primary damaging stage. Initially, they scrape the leaf surface (skeletonization), but as they reach later instars, they consume large irregular sections of the foliage. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which stunts the plant’s growth and reduces its ability to produce fruit or seeds, ultimately impacting the harvest quality.
Control measures. Effective management starts with cultural practices such as field sanitation, clearing weeds that host the larvae, and soil cultivation to disrupt overwintering pupae. During outbreaks, the application of biological agents like Bacillus thuringiensis or selective chemical insecticides targeting lepidopteran pests is recommended based on regular field scouting and monitoring.
