The Rusty-dot pearl (Phlyctaenia ferrugalis), also known as Udea ferrugalis, is a moth belonging to the family Crambidae. It is a significant pest primarily known for affecting crops in greenhouses and glasshouses, where it thrives due to the consistently stable temperature and humidity levels provided for commercial plant production.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Affected crops include various vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as a diverse array of ornamental flowers like chrysanthemums, geraniums, and cyclamens. Its ability to thrive on both ornamental and edible plants makes it a challenge for diversified greenhouse growers.

The life cycle of the moth consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Female moths deposit their eggs on the underside of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, actively consuming plant tissues. Under optimal greenhouse temperatures, the entire life cycle is relatively rapid, enabling the production of multiple overlapping generations throughout the year.

Larval damage is the primary cause of concern. The larvae skeletonize the leaves, creating irregular holes and consuming the leaf parenchyma while leaving the veins intact. They are known for weaving silken webs or rolling leaves together to create shelters, which protects them from predators and pesticides. This feeding behavior significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Maintaining high levels of sanitation within the greenhouse to eliminate alternative hosts.
• Using pheromone traps for early detection and monitoring of adult moth populations.
• Biological control measures, such as the release of parasitic wasps or the use of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays.
• Judicious application of selective insecticides when larval populations exceed economic injury levels.
