The elderberry moth (Phlyctaenia tertialis) is a member of the Crambidae family, specifically known for its association with the Sambucus genus. While it is not always classified as a primary agricultural pest on a commercial scale, it can cause significant aesthetic and developmental damage to elderberry shrubs in ornamental and small-scale horticultural settings.
The life cycle of the moth consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are the primary damaging agents. They typically overwinter as pupae within debris or protected areas near the host plant. Emergence usually occurs in late spring or early summer, depending on regional climatic conditions and ambient temperature.
The larval activity is characterized by leaf-rolling and webbing. The larvae feed on the parenchyma of the leaves and may burrow into the soft pith of tender stems. This feeding behavior restricts the transport of nutrients and water, often causing the terminal ends of the branches to wilt or die back entirely, which stunts the plant's growth.
Common signs of an infestation include:
- webbed, rolled-up foliage clustered at the stem tips;
- black or brown frass accumulated within the silk webbing;
- wilting of stems despite adequate irrigation;
- reduced flower production and berry set on infected branches.
To mitigate the impact of the elderberry moth, growers should focus on cultural practices such as pruning and destroying infested shoots early in the season to remove larvae before they pupate. In cases of severe outbreaks, targeted applications of bio-rational insecticides or conventional pyrethroids can be effective when applied during the early larval stage, ensuring maximum contact with the feeding sites.
