Satellite sphinx moth

Systematic position: The satellite sphinx moth (scientifically known as Pholus satellitia or Eumorpha satellitia) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. These moths are characterized by their powerful flight and nocturnal activity, while their larvae are known for being voracious consumers of specific plant foliage.

Host crops and damage: The primary host plants for Pholus satellitia are members of the Vitaceae family, particularly grapevines. The larvae are the damaging stage, as they consume leaves aggressively. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, which negatively impacts the vine's ability to store energy and maintain healthy growth patterns throughout the season.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female moth lays eggs on the undersides of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding primarily at night to avoid avian predators. Once mature, the larvae burrow into the soil or leaf litter to pupate, where they remain until the next developmental stage.

Economic impact: The pest’s voracity can cause substantial yield losses in commercial vineyards. By stripping the plant of its leaves, the larvae hinder the ripening of fruit and the hardening of the woody canes. This weakened state makes the vines more susceptible to environmental stress, winter damage, and secondary infections by pathogens.

Control measures: Managing Pholus satellitia requires a proactive and integrated approach to ensure vineyard health:

• Cultivating the soil around vine trunks to disrupt the pupation sites.
• Manual inspection and removal of larvae on young vines or in small garden settings.
• Applying Bacillus thuringiensis-based bio-insecticides which target lepidopteran larvae specifically.
• Utilizing selective chemical treatments during the early larval stages when they are most vulnerable to contact or ingested pesticides.
