Description
Systematic position. Phrixolepia belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug moths. The larvae of this genus are distinct due to their fleshy, slug-like appearance. Some species possess stinging spines that serve as a defense mechanism, making them hazardous to handle without protective equipment.
Host plants and damage. This pest primarily attacks various woody ornamental plants and fruit trees, including species of Malus and Pyrus. The larvae are voracious feeders that consume leaf tissue in large quantities. Severe infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which reduces the plant's ability to store energy for the next growing season and decreases overall fruit production.
Biology and lifecycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding immediately. As they mature, they construct firm, oval-shaped cocoons, often attached to twigs or branches, where they remain in the pupal stage throughout the winter months until the following spring.
Nature of damage. Early instars typically cause leaf skeletonization, leaving the leaf veins intact. As the larvae grow, they consume larger portions of the leaf blade, eventually leaving only the midrib or causing complete leaf destruction. The presence of these pests is often accompanied by dark frass pellets and molted skins, which serve as early warning signs for horticulturalists.
Control measures. Effective pest management requires a multi-stage approach:
- Manual removal and destruction of cocoons during dormant pruning.
- Monitoring of moth flights using pheromone traps to time treatments.
- Application of selective bio-insecticides when larvae are in their early instars.
- Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids to keep populations below the economic threshold.
