Silky slug moth

The Silky slug moth (Phrixolepia sericea) is a moth species belonging to the family Limacodidae, within the order Lepidoptera. In agricultural contexts, it is recognized as a foliage-feeding pest that primarily impacts trees and woody shrubs. Its biological classification places it among the slug moths, known for their unique larval morphology.

The life cycle of Phrixolepia sericea consists of complete metamorphosis. Adult moths are characterized by a distinct silky appearance of their wings. After mating, females deposit eggs on the surface of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several instars. These larvae are slug-like in appearance, lacking visible prolegs, which helps them move smoothly across leaf surfaces while feeding.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily associated with the larval stage. Caterpillars consume leaf tissue, often starting from the underside, which leads to skeletonization or complete destruction of the leaf lamina. Severe infestations significantly reduce the photosynthetic surface area of the plant, weakening its growth, reducing fruit yields, and increasing susceptibility to secondary pests and diseases.

The host range of this pest includes various broad-leaved trees and shrubs. The insect thrives in environments where host plants provide sufficient cover and food resources. Due to its cryptic behavior during the early larval stages, infestations may often go unnoticed until significant leaf damage becomes visible to the grower or horticulturist.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Phrixolepia sericea. The primary tactics involve:

• Regular field scouting to identify early signs of defoliation.
• Preservation of natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
• Application of bio-rational pesticides, such as those containing Bacillus thuringiensis, which target larvae while sparing beneficial insects.
• Chemical intervention with insecticides only when economic injury levels are exceeded.
