Small green stink bug

Piezodorus guildinii is a harmful insect species belonging to the family Pentatomidae, within the order Hemiptera. In agricultural sectors, particularly in the Americas, it is recognized as a primary pest of legumes, specifically soybeans, known for causing severe economic damage to crop yields.

This pest mainly targets crops such as soybeans, beans, alfalfa, and other leguminous plants. It possesses a broad host range, which allows it to migrate effectively between fields as different crops enter their reproductive stages, ensuring a continuous food supply throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of this bug comprises an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage (imago). Females deposit their eggs in distinct clusters, typically on the underside of leaves or on pods. Under optimal climate conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately 30 to 40 days, enabling multiple generations to occur annually.

Both adults and nymphs cause damage by using their piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate pods and feed on the developing seeds. This feeding activity results in shriveled seeds, reduced seed weight, lower oil content, and impaired germination potential. Furthermore, feeding sites often become entry points for secondary fungal pathogens.
