Systematic position: Piezodorus lituratus, commonly known as the gorse shieldbug, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a widespread insect species known for its characteristic shield-shaped body, which changes color from green in summer to a reddish or brownish hue in autumn.

Host plants: This insect primarily feeds on plants from the Fabaceae family. While gorse is a primary wild host, the pest frequently attacks agricultural crops, including soybeans, peas, alfalfa, and clovers. Its presence in fields is often associated with the proximity of wild shrubbery or uncultivated legume-rich landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle involves egg, nymphal, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as an adult in leaf litter, dense grass, or under tree bark. In late spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs on the host plants. Depending on the climate, the species may produce one or two generations per year, with nymphs becoming active during the most sensitive phenological stages of the host crops.

Damage and harmfulness: As a sap-sucking insect, Piezodorus lituratus punctures plant tissues with its proboscis.
