Description

The Lantana longhorn beetle (Plagiohammus spinipennis) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is primarily recognized in agricultural science not as a threat to crops, but as a biological control agent introduced to suppress the growth of Lantana camara, a highly invasive weed.

The host range of this beetle is highly specific, targeting the genus Lantana. The larvae inhabit the stems and the root crown of the plant. By drilling into the plant's vascular tissues, they effectively disrupt the metabolic processes, leading to significant physiological stress in the weed population.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs on the stem bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the core of the stem. During their development, which involves several larval instars, they consume the internal tissues, effectively hollowing out the stem. After development, the pupal stage occurs within the plant tissue before the adult emerges.

The impact of this insect is profound due to the structural damage caused to the plants. The hollowed stems lose their structural integrity and are prone to breaking in windy conditions. Prolonged infestation significantly reduces the reproductive capacity of the weed and can eventually lead to the mortality of mature, dense stands.

Therefore, no chemical or physical measures are applied to manage this beetle.
