Alluaud's ant

Alluaud's ant (Plagiolepis alluaudi) is an invasive ant species belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Originating from tropical regions, it has become a significant concern for greenhouse growers worldwide. Due to its extremely small size and complex colony structure, it is often classified as a persistent household and agricultural pest.

This species primarily affects ornamental and greenhouse-grown plants. Unlike direct herbivores, Alluaud's ant acts as a mutualist of sap-sucking insects such as aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. By aggressively protecting these pests from natural predators and parasitoids, the ants allow the sap-suckers to thrive, causing severe damage to the host plant tissues.

The biology of Plagiolepis alluaudi is defined by its polygynous structure, meaning a single colony contains multiple egg-laying queens. This adaptation makes the colonies highly resilient to localized extermination efforts. They are opportunistic nesters, often utilizing moist soil in pots, electrical boxes, or structural gaps in greenhouses, which complicates standard pest control procedures.

Economic damage is caused by the indirect proliferation of plant diseases. The honeydew excreted by the aphids the ants protect serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. These fungi cover the leaf surface in a black, powdery layer, which hinders photosynthesis and severely stresses the plant. If left untreated, the plant will show signs of stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventual death due to the combined pressure of suction pests and fungal infections.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. The most successful strategy involves using slow-acting toxic baits that are brought back to the nest by worker ants to eliminate the queens. Additionally, maintaining strict sanitation in greenhouse environments and inspecting all incoming plant shipments for signs of ant or aphid activity are critical. In cases of high infestation, combining chemical control with biological agents targeting the aphids is recommended.
