The Plagiolepis pygmaea ant is a species belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. Known for their remarkably small size, these ants are widely distributed across various temperate and Mediterranean environments. Despite their diminutive stature, they function as significant secondary pests by fostering conditions that favor the proliferation of more damaging primary pests on agricultural crops.

The primary agricultural impact of this species stems from its mutualistic relationship with honeydew-producing insects such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. The ants actively protect these pests from predators, essentially farming them for their honeydew. This symbiotic protection allows aphid populations to explode, which leads to severe sap depletion in the host plants and significant growth retardation.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. These colonies are often polygynous, meaning they contain multiple queens, which allows the colony to grow very rapidly and recover quickly from localized disturbances. Their nests can be found in a variety of locations, including soil, under rocks, or within tree crevices, making them difficult to eradicate completely.

Damage is characterized by stunted plant development and the secondary growth of sooty mold on the leaves. As the ants tend to their "livestock," the honeydew covers the plant surface, blocking sunlight and reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis. In severe infestations, the cumulative stress can lead to branch dieback and significantly lower fruit or vegetable quality and quantity.

Management strategies for controlling these ants include:

  • installing sticky bands around tree trunks to physically block ant access to the canopy;
  • applying specialized gel baits that are carried back to the nest to eliminate the queens;
  • implementing biological control to manage aphid and scale populations effectively;
  • regular monitoring of tree bases for nest entrances and applying approved contact insecticides if necessary;
  • improving garden sanitation to remove potential nesting sites under debris.
