Winter platygaster

The Winter platygaster (Platygaster hiemalis) is a specialized parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Platygastridae within the order Hymenoptera. While often indexed in lists of insects associated with crops, it is specifically recognized by agronomists as a highly beneficial entomophage that targets the Hessian fly, a major pest of wheat, rye, and barley.

The insect does not damage crops directly; instead, it is a primary parasitoid of the Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor).
