Platygaster mainensis

Platygaster mainensis is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the Hymenoptera order and the Platygastridae family. In agricultural settings, it is recognized not as a pest, but as a critical natural enemy, or parasitoid, of the Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor), a major pest of wheat and other small grains.

The biology of Platygaster mainensis is centered on its host. The female wasp deposits its eggs into the eggs of the Hessian fly. The developing larvae feed internally, eventually consuming the host, which prevents the fly from reaching the stage where it can damage the cereal stems.
