Brown-winged green bug

The brown-winged green bug (Plautia stali) is a notorious agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. Originally native to East Asia, this insect has become a significant concern in many regions due to its ability to spread rapidly and damage a wide variety of high-value agricultural and horticultural crops.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a broad range of host plants. Major targets include vegetable crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, as well as various fruit trees like peach, pear, and grapes. The insect's wide host range makes it a consistent threat, as it can migrate between different crops throughout the growing season.

The biology of Plautia stali involves a gradual metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as an adult, seeking refuge in leaf litter, debris, or artificial structures. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge to feed and deposit eggs on the underside of host leaves. In warmer climates, the bug can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population growth.

Damage caused by the brown-winged green bug is the result of its piercing-sucking mouthparts. As the bug feeds on plant tissues, it injects digestive enzymes that cause local necrosis, pitting, and discoloration of the fruit skin. These feeding sites not only render the fruit unmarketable due to unsightly scarring and deformation but also act as entry points for various fungal and bacterial pathogens, leading to further decay.

Effective management strategies require an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key tactics include:

• Regular field scouting and the use of pheromone traps to monitor population density;
