Plectoptera

Plectoptera (lat. Plectoptera) belongs to a specific group of insects classified within the order Blattodea and the family Ectobiidae. While most members of this family are primarily known as forest or synanthropic species, certain forms are capable of migrating into agricultural lands, where they can emerge as pests to various plants.

This pest mainly affects ornamental plants, greenhouse vegetable crops, and some field crops in southern regions. Both adults and nymphs pose a significant threat as they actively consume young shoots, foliage, and fruits, which significantly degrades the quality and marketability of the produce.

The life cycle of Plectoptera includes an egg stage, often protected by specialized casings, followed by several nymphal instars that gradually develop into adults. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels, with greenhouse environments often allowing for continuous year-round breeding, making eradication difficult.

Damage symptoms typically manifest as irregular holes or consumption of the leaf margins, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize and weakens its overall physiological state. Furthermore, these insects can act as mechanical vectors for various fungal and bacterial pathogens that exploit plant tissues damaged during feeding.

Effective management strategies rely on an integrated approach, including the use of contact and stomach-action insecticides, consistent monitoring with pheromone or sticky traps, and rigorous sanitation of greenhouse facilities between planting cycles. Crop rotation and the systematic removal of surrounding weeds are also critical to reducing potential habitats and population pressure.
