Systematic position: The shield bug Podops inuncta belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. This species is recognized by its distinctively shaped pronotum with prominent projections, which distinguishes it from other common bug species found in agricultural fields and grasslands.

Crops and economic impact: This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats. By piercing the plant tissues and feeding on sap, Podops inuncta interferes with nutrient transport, leading to stunted growth, reduced tillering, and shriveled grain formation, which results in significant losses in both yield and quality.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Podops inuncta follows a pattern of incomplete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or soil crevices near crop fields. In the spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females lay eggs on host plants, and the subsequent nymphs go through five instars before reaching adulthood, completing one generation per year in typical temperate climates.

Damage patterns: Infestation is characterized by chlorotic spots and necrotic lesions on stems and leaves. When the bug feeds on the developing ear, it can cause partial or total sterility of the spikelets. High density of these insects can lead to widespread crop lodging or significant thinning of the stand, especially during early development stages.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this insect. Key strategies include:

• Deep plowing of fields in autumn to destroy overwintering sites.
