Description
Systematic position. The broad shield bug (Poecilocoris latus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. It is recognized as a significant pest in various agricultural regions, particularly in Asia, where its population dynamics directly influence the yield of several important cultivated plant species.
Affected crops and damage. This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It primarily targets tea shrubs, fruit trees, and various ornamental plants. The bug uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from buds, tender shoots, and developing fruits, leading to stunted growth, necrotic spots, and premature fruit abscission.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Poecilocoris latus comprises the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult bugs typically overwinter in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or under tree bark. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, feed, and begin the reproductive phase, laying eggs on the undersides of leaves.
