Description

The aspen buprestid (Poecilonota variolosa) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a wood-boring insect that primarily targets deciduous trees, showing a strong preference for members of the Populus genus, particularly aspen and poplar species.

The life cycle of this beetle is complex and typically spans several years. Adults emerge in late spring or summer to feed on foliage and mate. Females deposit eggs in the crevices of the bark, particularly on stressed or damaged trunks. The larvae, which are the most destructive stage, spend their time tunneling through the phloem and cambium layer.

The larvae create wide, serpentine galleries under the bark, which effectively girdle the tree. This disruption of nutrient and water flow causes severe physiological stress. Over time, the internal damage leads to branch dieback, crown thinning, and, in severe cases, the mortality of the entire tree.

Recognition of this pest is primarily based on signs of infestation, such as D-shaped or oval exit holes and the accumulation of frass on the bark surface. Heavily infested trees often exhibit depressed areas in the bark where the galleries have been formed. These symptoms make the tree a magnet for secondary pests and opportunistic fungal infections.

Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural and sanitary practices. Key strategies include:

  • Prompt removal and disposal of infested and weakened trees to reduce the population density.
  • Maintaining tree health through proper thinning and irrigation to increase natural resistance.
  • Applying systemic insecticides on high-value trees during the adult flight period.
  • Encouraging natural biological controls such as woodpeckers and parasitic wasps that target the larval stage.
