Systematic position: The Aspen Buprestid (Poecilonota variolosa) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the Buprestidae family. Known as metallic wood-boring beetles, these insects are specialized pests that play a critical role in the natural decomposition of weakened trees, though they often cause economic damage in forestry.
Host plants: This beetle primarily attacks trees within the Populus genus, with a strong preference for aspen (Populus tremula) and various poplar species. Occasionally, it may be found on willow trees, especially those growing in poor soil conditions or recovering from environmental stressors.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Poecilonota variolosa typically lasts one to two years. Adult beetles emerge during the summer months, feeding on leaves and bark before mating. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the cambium layer, creating long, flat galleries filled with frass, which disrupts the tree’s nutrient flow.
Damage and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding beneath the bark. This activity results in the necrosis of the cambium, leading to the drying of the tree. Large-scale infestations can cause significant timber loss, as the galleries reduce the quality of the wood and can eventually lead to the mortality of entire stands of young or stressed trees.
Control measures: The most effective management strategy involves silvicultural practices. Regular sanitary thinning, specifically the removal of infested or weakened trees before adult beetles emerge, is essential to reduce the population. Additionally, maintaining forest health through proper tree spacing and protecting trees from mechanical wounds helps prevent successful colonization by the pest.
