The toad grasshopper (Poekilocerus bufonius) is a significant orthopteran insect belonging to the family Pyrgomorphidae. It is widely recognized for its robust build and distinct coloration, serving as a specialized herbivore adapted to arid environments throughout parts of Africa and the Middle East.
The species is primarily associated with plants of the family Apocynaceae, particularly the Sodom apple (Calotropis procera). Because it consumes toxic latex-containing plants, the grasshopper itself becomes chemically defended, sequestering plant toxins that deter many of its natural predators in the wild.
The life cycle of Poekilocerus bufonius is governed by seasonal rainfall patterns in its native habitat.
