Porhydrus lineatus is a species of diving beetle belonging to the family Dytiscidae, within the order Coleoptera. These insects are commonly found in standing or slow-moving freshwater bodies, often interacting with agricultural environments such as irrigation canals, drainage ditches, and rice paddies.

The beetle primarily impacts aquatic vegetation, feeding on soft plant tissues and algae. While it is not a direct pest of traditional terrestrial field crops, its presence in managed aquatic systems can lead to the destruction of beneficial water plants, which play a crucial role in maintaining the oxygen levels and structural integrity of irrigation systems.

The biology of the striped diving beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs on submerged aquatic plants. The predatory larvae and the adult beetles inhabit the water column, where they remain active throughout the warmer months. As they are highly mobile, these beetles can easily colonize new water bodies, making them a persistent presence in agricultural zones.

The damage caused by this species is mainly indirect. High populations can disrupt the aquatic ecosystem, affecting the health of the water used for irrigation. In specific setups like rice fields, their feeding behavior can harm juvenile plant shoots, while the larval predation reduces the population of beneficial organisms that contribute to natural nutrient cycling in the fields.
