Procornitermes

Procornitermes is a genus of termites belonging to the Termitidae family. These insects are well-known in tropical regions, particularly in South America, where they function as ecosystem engineers by building large mounds. However, their dietary habits frequently bring them into conflict with agricultural interests, classifying them as destructive pests.

The primary hosts for these pests include both forestry species like Eucalyptus and various crops such as sugarcane, corn, and soybean. By attacking the subterranean parts of these plants, termites jeopardize the establishment of new plantations and the viability of established fields, causing significant economic losses to farmers.

The biological cycle of Procornitermes is centered on a caste-based social structure consisting of workers, soldiers, and reproductives. They exhibit a high level of coordination in foraging and nest construction. Their colonies rely on specialized pheromone communication to maintain homeostasis and protect the queen, which makes them highly resilient to environmental stressors.

Damage occurs primarily at the root and stem base levels. By excavating tunnels within the plant tissues, these termites inhibit the uptake of water and nutrients, eventually causing the plant to collapse. This damage is often exacerbated by secondary soil-borne pathogens that enter the plant through the wounds created by the termites.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Procornitermes involves several strategies:

• Soil treatment with granular insecticides to create a chemical barrier.
• Mechanical disruption of mounds through deep tillage practices to expose colonies.
• Deployment of bait stations containing slow-acting insecticides that are transferred back to the mound.
• Monitoring of field edges where colonies often originate before spreading into cultivated rows.
