Prophantis

Systematic position. Prophantis is a genus of moths belonging to the family Crambidae (order Lepidoptera). These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target the reproductive structures of plants, causing significant challenges for producers in tropical and subtropical regions.

Affected crops. The most notable species within the genus is Prophantis smaragdina, which is a recognized pest of coffee crops (Coffea spp.). While primarily associated with coffee, the genus is known for its preference for fruit-bearing plants, where the larvae can thrive by exploiting the nutrient-rich tissues of developing fruits.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Prophantis involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth deposits eggs on the surface of young fruits. Once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit. This endocarpic feeding habit protects the larvae from predators and environmental stressors, allowing them to complete their development in relative safety.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The larvae feed on the internal tissues and seeds of the fruit. This feeding activity leads to fruit malformation, shriveling, and premature abscission. The economic impact is severe, as the infestation directly reduces the yield volume and significantly degrades the quality of the harvested crop, making it unsuitable for premium markets.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Scouting for initial signs of entry holes in the fruit is essential for timing insecticide applications. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies typically include:

• Regular monitoring using light or pheromone traps to predict population surges.
• Targeted chemical control using systemic insecticides before the larvae penetrate the fruit.
• Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infested fallen berries to break the lifecycle.
