Description
Prophantis smaragdina is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This moth species is recognized for its detrimental impact on coffee cultivation, particularly within its native tropical habitats.
The primary host for this pest is the coffee plant (Coffea spp.). The larvae exhibit a strong preference for the reproductive structures of the plant, focusing their feeding activities on developing coffee berries and seeds, which directly results in economic losses for growers.
The biological cycle follows a typical holometabolous development, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth deposits eggs on the surface of the fruit, and upon hatching, the larvae bore into the berry to feed. This feeding behavior makes the larvae protected from many external environmental factors during their most active growth phase.
Damage assessment reveals that infested berries often show premature shedding and decay. The larvae feed on the beans inside, rendering the crop commercially unviable.
