Description
Stoneflies of the genus Protonemura belong to the order Plecoptera, family Nemouridae. While generally considered beneficial members of aquatic ecosystems, in specific agricultural scenarios where fields are flooded or situated near rivers, their larvae can become incidental pests that affect young plant tissues.
These insects thrive in well-oxygenated aquatic environments. While their primary diet consists of decaying organic matter (detritus), in scenarios with high population density or lack of natural food, they may shift to browsing on green tissues of submerged or semi-aquatic plants, causing damage to crop seedlings.
