Systematic position: Psammotis pulveralis, commonly known as the powdery snout moth, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is a moth species characterized by its dusting-like wing pattern, which provides excellent camouflage against natural substrates in its habitat. Understanding its taxonomy is crucial for identifying its morphological traits.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets industrial and essential oil-producing crops. Its larvae show a strong preference for plants within the Lamiaceae family, such as mint, sage, and lavender. While these are the preferred hosts, the pest may also be found on various wild plants that serve as alternative nutritional sources during certain periods of the season.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The insect typically overwinters as a pupa or a late-stage larva within the soil profile or protected crop residue. Adults emerge during the spring or early summer, depending on climatic conditions, to begin the reproductive phase and egg-laying on host vegetation.

Damage and economic impact: Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage. The larvae consume leaf tissue, often causing skeletonization or irregular holes that lead to significant foliage loss. Severe infestations result in reduced photosynthetic surface area, which hampers the physiological development of the plant and directly decreases the yield and quality of essential oils or biomass.

Control measures: Management of P. pulveralis relies on a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Culturally, deep plowing after harvest helps bury and kill overwintering pupae. Sanitation of the field edges to remove weed reservoirs is also essential. If population thresholds are exceeded, the application of targeted insecticides, scheduled to coincide with early larval instar development, is necessary to minimize agricultural losses.
