Avocado lace bug

The avocado lace bug (Pseudacysta perseae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. It is a significant pest characterized by its distinctive lace-like wing structure and pronotal markings. These insects primarily inhabit the abaxial (underside) surface of leaves, where they feed by piercing the plant cells and extracting sap.

The primary hosts for this species are plants within the Lauraceae family, most notably avocado (Persea americana). While the insect shows a strong preference for avocado trees, it can also infest related species such as red bay. Due to its reproductive capacity, it is considered a pest of economic concern in various horticultural zones.

The life cycle of Pseudacysta perseae involves egg, nymphal stages, and adult phases. Females typically deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves, often protecting them with a dark, sticky substance or excrement. The duration of the life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperature, allowing for multiple generations per year in tropical and subtropical climates.

Damage caused by the avocado lace bug is easily recognizable by the chlorotic spots that appear on the upper surface of the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to necrosis and premature leaf drop. The presence of black, tar-like excrement on the leaf surface is a secondary symptom that facilitates colonization by sooty mold, further reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the tree.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate damage:

• Regular field scouting to detect early infestations before populations explode.
• Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to suppress nymphal development.
• Promotion of biological control through the conservation of natural predators like lacewings and predatory bugs.
• Maintenance of tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to help plants withstand feeding stress.
