Description

Systematic position: The Surinam cockroach (Pycnoscelus surinamensis) belongs to the order Blattodea and the family Blaberidae. Native to tropical regions, this insect has become a widespread pest in greenhouses and tropical nurseries worldwide, often hitchhiking on international shipments of potted ornamental plants.

Target crops: As a polyphagous species, it attacks a wide range of horticultural crops. It is particularly damaging to greenhouse plants, nursery seedlings, and interior landscaping specimens that are maintained in moist potting soils, providing the ideal habitat for this burrowing pest.

Biology and life cycle: This insect is primarily nocturnal and subterranean, spending most of its time in the soil. A key biological trait of P. surinamensis is parthenogenesis, where females produce viable offspring without mating, allowing populations to explode rapidly in protected, stable indoor environments.

Damage and severity: Both nymphs and adults feed on the roots, tubers, and basal stems of plants. This feeding behavior causes significant physiological stress, stunting growth and leading to leaf chlorosis or total wilting. Root damage also creates entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot and plant mortality.

Management and control: Controlling this pest requires a proactive approach focused on sanitation and chemical intervention:

  • Sterilizing growing media to eliminate eggs and nymphs.
  • Inspecting all incoming plant materials for signs of soil disturbance.
  • Applying granular or liquid soil-drench insecticides as needed.
  • Using mechanical traps to monitor adult movement and population density.
