Systematic position and classification. The species Pygomenida varipennis belongs to the order Coleoptera and is classified within the family Chrysomelidae, commonly known as leaf beetles. As a recognized pest in various agricultural regions, understanding its taxonomic position is essential for entomologists and agronomists developing management protocols.

Host crops. This insect primarily targets plants within the Chenopodiaceae family. The most significant economic impact is observed in sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet crops. Both adults and larvae can cause substantial damage to these crops if populations are left uncontrolled during the early stages of plant development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis involving egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding voraciously on the foliage. Their development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly temperature and humidity, which dictate the speed of generations throughout the season.

Damage and economic significance. The larvae are responsible for the primary damage, characterized by skeletonization of the leaf tissue. By consuming the parenchyma and leaving the veins intact, they reduce the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis. In severe infestations, the foliage is decimated, which leads to significant reductions in root crop yield and sugar content.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to mitigating damage from Pygomenida varipennis. Recommended practices include:

• implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle;
• removing host weeds from the vicinity of fields to eliminate reservoirs;
• monitoring adult emergence and applying targeted insecticides when the economic threshold is reached;
• utilizing autumn soil cultivation to disrupt overwintering sites.
