The burdock borer moth (Pyrausta penitalis) is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is recognized as a significant pest, primarily impacting plants within the Asteraceae family, where it spends a large part of its larval stage inside the plant tissue.

Plants affected by this pest include the common burdock (Arctium) and occasionally various agricultural crops. The larvae are stem-borers, meaning they penetrate the stalks, petioles, and inflorescences of the host plant, effectively disrupting the plant's nutrient transport system.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths typically lay eggs on the leaves or stems of host plants. Once the larvae hatch, they quickly tunnel into the stems to feed, which provides them with protection from environmental factors and many predators.
